As depicted in Copley's painting, Watson and The Shark, there were a variety of compositional and emotional aims of Neoclassical and Romantic artists during this important time period. For the Neoclassical artists it is a historical painting, a highly esteemed theme of artwork, and commissioned for a famous military person named Watson showing his encounter with a shark that took his leg. Its composition is in a triangle form to create stability and create reason. It also have a pathos to the art piece but in a way that there is almost static sadness and fear. There were aims to show pathos but in a reasonable and proper way, and also to gain wealth and fame through popular themes and commissions.
