It is obvious that Durer is affected by the Renaissance and Italy as this is a religiously themed painting, something that gained popularity after the early part of the Renaissance. Durer responds to the the perfection and preciseness of the Italian Renaissance by sacrificing naturalism for the use of the Vitruvian and idealistic proportions of Adam and Eve in his painting. With the use of contrapposto, the figures look humanistic, but they are proportionally "perfect" and Durer uses them to show off his style and mastering of the art of creating perfect proportions.
There are some Medieval aspects of Durer's piece, some of these being the reference to the four different biles that were once believed to circulate the body. These are represented by the elk, the ox, the rabbit, and the cat as each of the different biles. Dark and dense aspects of the painting also represent the Medieval era as they call to the sin of humanity like Adam and Eve have sinned.
Durer became very good at the art of engraving and creating pieces that could be copied and distributed more than just once. In a time when new technology was arriving to create prints of artistic pieces, Durer became known as one of the best printmakers of all time because of his ability to perfect these skills needed, allowing him to spread his influence and gain more wealth. He became the best due to his apprenticeship experience from his father.
